A small ryokan up in the mountains at Nakagawa Onsen, with an indoor bath and an open-air bath set among trees, each split by gender on a time-swap rather than open to both at once (no mixed bathing, no private bath). The water is alkaline and runs a little silky on the skin, and it is known as "beauty water" (bijin no yu, 美人の湯) for leaving skin smooth. It is kept on the milder side rather than scalding. Guests describe the rotenburo as feeling like a walk in the woods, and the place stays low-key rather than resort-scale.
