A sharp, prickly acidic spring from Myoban in Beppu, carrying sulfur as a second character: strongly acidic enough to sting slightly on contact, colorless and clear, with a tart taste and the faint rotten-egg note of H₂S. It is lightly mineralized overall, yet rich in metasilicic acid at 153 mg/kg, which leaves a thin silica film on the skin and places it in the beauty-water family despite its acidity. Among Japan's hottest natural sources; the analysed sample was taken from the storage basin rather than the wellhead.

888. Okamotoya Ryokan, Beppu (pt.1) ★★★ The main ryokan in Myoban, Beppu. I stayed overnight. No day-use bathing. They stamp the Beppu Onsen-do stamp. I booked one night for one person. The room was simple, but the view from the window of the bridge was great. Dinner was kaiseki, and breakfast was served in a separate room. I was seated alone at a table with a direct view of the bridge, the mountains, and Beppu. The food was tasty, but the portions felt small. The staff were Japanese, and the proprietress was very attentive, she knows about onsen achievements, and the service was excellent. The rest of the staff were polite, but their service was a bit weaker than the proprietress's. The ryokan itself is small, but it turned out to be more basic than I expected. Still, its status because of the special onsen and the fairly high Beppu price level had created somewhat higher expectations. I don't have any direct complaints, it was more a case of my expectations being too high from the start. About the onsen: 1. Indoor polygonal bath. Very nice view from the window of the bridge, and the windows can be opened. The water is clear, whitish-gray, with lime. Temperature 44-44.5. It is easy to breathe inside. 2. Indoor stone bath in the next room. The view from the bath is simpler, since part of it is blocked by the door and the trees outside the window. The water is clear, whitish-blue, with lime. Temperature 43.5-44. 31.03.2026 01.04.2026

888. Okamotoya Ryokan, Beppu (pt.2) ★★★ About the onsen baths: 3. Large outdoor stone bath. It is located in a low-lying area, and when you go outside, the whole view looks gorgeous, with a view of the rotenburo, the bridge, and the mountains. When you are in the water, you cannot see the bridge itself, but the atmosphere shift works really well as you go down, it becomes very natural and as private as possible. In the evening, this effect becomes even stronger. The water is cloudy turquoise with lime. Temperature: 40.5. Even though I had high expectations for the ryokan itself, the baths are still phenomenal and work perfectly together, when the immersion into the location starts from above with the indoor baths overlooking the bridge, and then continues down to the incredible rotenburo in the low-lying area with its immersive atmosphere. This is a top-tier onsen place. 31.03.2026 01.04.2026
