Yutoriro Yamaga is a modern ryokan on the Kikuchi River in Yamaga, Kumamoto, with rooms looking out over the river and the town. It leans unpretentious rather than formal: bright, spacious rooms, a stylish lounge, and an indoor and open-air bath fed by Yamaga's hot spring. Two room types have their own private open-air bath, but it's filled with ordinary hot water rather than the spring itself. The lobby has an irori hearth where guests roast marshmallows in their yukata, along with a drink bar and games like table tennis and billiards.
