Aokiya is an old-established ryokan partway up Mt. Tsukuba, close to the mountain shrine's entrance. Its rooftop open-air bath, Unjou no Yu (雲上の湯), has no roof at all and looks straight out over the Kanto plain, clear enough on a good day to pick out Mt. Fuji in the distance. The indoor bath, Ginga no Yu (銀河の湯), has its own washing stalls, and there is a sauna on the men's side with set evening hours. Some rooms come with their own open-air bath, either a ceramic tub or a hinoki one. The water is smooth and alkaline. The hotel keeps an old-fashioned, Showa-era feel rather than a recently renovated one, and guests can book it for day-use bathing as well as a stay.
