Two bathing halls, one on each floor, swap between men's and women's every other day: a stone-floored bath downstairs and a rock bath upstairs with a bench facing the Katsuura River. Each floor also has a jet bath, a sauna and a cold plunge. The water is a cold sulfur spring piped in from a fissure in the mountains 1.5 km away and warmed with a wood-chip biomass boiler. Local legend credits Kobo Daishi (弘法大師) with finding the spring here after a vision of the Buddha of medicine. The inn itself is built from local cedar with diatomite-plastered walls in a quiet river valley in Kamikatsu, and its restaurant serves river fish and mountain vegetables in season.
