Hotel Fusui stands alone on the shore of Lake Shikaribetsu, inside Daisetsuzan National Park, where summers stay cool and winters turn seriously cold. The baths are split by gender, and each side has two indoor tubs plus an open-air bath built out over the water. On clear days, the mountain across the lake reflects on the surface in the shape of a pair of lips. The water is soft on the skin. There is also a free foot bath along the lakeshore out front, closed through winter. Every guest room faces the lake, and the sky fills with stars at night. It is registered as an official international tourist hotel inside the park, with little else around for miles.
