Ibuki no Sato is a one-building ryokan in the hills of Niimi, in Okayama's Chugoku mountains, built around a hot spring locals call the skin-beauty bath for how smooth and silky the alkaline water feels. The rotenburo is set among rocks with water trickling down past a bamboo fence, and there's an indoor bath, a jacuzzi, and a sauna alongside it. Day-trippers can drop in as well as overnight guests. Staying guests round out the soak with kaiseki dinners built around Chiya-gyu (千屋牛), the local brand of beef, and a night in a plain tatami room. In summer the same hillside runs a seasonal water park next door, and in winter a ski resort, both under the same operator.
