A gentle alkaline simple thermal spring drawn from Dogo Onsen's No. 2 distribution station in Yunomachi, Matsuyama. The alkalinity gives the slippery feel that puts it squarely in Japan's beauty-water family, and a generous helping of metasilicic acid leaves a thin silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards; dissolved solids stay light, so the water is easy on the body. The posted notice lists autonomic nervous system instability, insomnia, depressed mood and fatigue recovery among its documented indications. It reaches the baths reheated and recirculated through a filter, with chlorine-based disinfection.

About

Chaharu sits about a minute's walk from Dogo Onsen Honkan, with a rooftop open-air bath and a large indoor bath on its upper floors, split into a women's bath (Tsuki no Yu) and a men's bath (Hoshi no Yu). The water is alkaline and simple in mineral makeup, smooth on the skin with little sting, and from the baths you can look south toward Matsuyama Castle and north toward Mount Ishizuchi. The main building's rooms don't have their own onsen bath (that's reserved for the connected annex, Yumekura), but guests still get the shared baths on top. The inn pairs modern, calm rooms with kaiseki dinners or buffet options and a restaurant that also takes non-staying guests for meals only, plus a kimono bar downstairs. It reads as a comfortable, contemporary base for soaking in one of Japan's oldest hot spring towns rather than an old-fashioned wooden ryokan.

748. Chaharu, Dogo Onsen, Matsuyama ★ Stayed overnight, no higaeri. For food, I had the buffet breakfast and dinner, they were fairly average. In the room, the floor was sunken in one spot. 1. Outdoor area. View of the city through the fence. 1.1. Stone bath with clear water, temperature 42.5. 1.2. Barrel bath with clear water, temperature 40.5. 2. Indoor bath. The water is clear, temperature 42. Breathing inside is fine. Good baths. Given the shortage of good scenic rotenburo in Dogo, this may be worth it. 07.01.2026 08.01.2026
