Yugashima Tatsuta stands where the Nekkogawa river meets another stream in the forested Yugashima onsen area of the Izu peninsula. Four private open-air baths are free to use and need no reservation, drawing straight from the spring; two are simple rock baths open to the sky among bamboo, while the other two, plus a pair of gender-separated indoor baths, stay open into the night. Some guest rooms also come with their own open-air bath fed straight from the source. The water is soft and kept flowing fresh, gentle on the skin. Women staying here also get free access to a ganbanyoku (岩盤浴) stone-bed heat room. Dinner is served on a kawadoko (川床) platform right above the water, the sound of the current running through the meal. The building keeps the feel of an older ryokan behind its renovation, and in early summer fireflies drift along the river just outside. Bathing here is for overnight guests only; there is no day-use option.
