Hanesawa Onsen Katoya Ryokan is a small, roughly 15-room ryokan in a quiet mountain hamlet in Sakegawa, Yamagata. The baths are separate men's and women's indoor baths on the ground floor. The water is slick and silky, almost syrupy on the skin, faintly cloudy, with a faint sulfur and oil-like scent. The temperature is on the mild side, so people tend to stay in a long while. Guest rooms have a sink but no private bath or toilet. The lobby has an irori (囲炉裏), a sunken hearth where guests relax after bathing, and the building has an old, lived-in feel rather than a renovated one. Day-use bathing is available, with free parking across the street at the village lot.
