Sanpouen is a small ryokan, just eight rooms, sitting at the top end of Yunoyama Onsen (湯の山温泉), where the road climbs on toward Mt. Gozaisho (御在所岳). Both the men's and women's baths pair an indoor tub with a rotenburo facing the mountain, and two of the rooms, Kamoshika (かもしか) and Gozaisho (御在所), have their own private open-air tub, one wood and one ceramic. There's also a reservable private bath for guests who'd rather not share. The spring is radium water, said to be gentle on the skin. With only eight rooms, you rarely cross paths with other guests, and reviewers keep coming back for the quiet and the view over the Mitaki River (三滝川) valley from their windows. Dinner tends to center on shabu-shabu, served in-room or in one of the small private dining rooms. Yunoyama's springs are said to go back to the Yoro era (養老年間), some 1300 years ago.
