About

Sukawa Kogen Onsen sits at 1,126 meters on Mt. Kurikoma and has been a healing-spring destination since the Heian period, making it one of the oldest continuously used hot springs in the Tohoku region. It is a member of Nihon Hitoyu wo Mamoru Kai (日本秘湯を守る会), the association for preserving remote hot springs. The main draw is Dainichiyu (大日湯), a large open-air bath fed by a sharp, acidic sulfur spring with a view toward Mt. Chokai on clear days. The indoor bath, Sukawa-no-yu (須川の湯), has its own small outdoor section as well. A short climb behind the inn leads to Oiran Furo (おいらん風呂), a small wooden hut where you lie in a mat-lined stall and let natural spring steam surround you. The ryokan closes for the winter season.
