A gentle simple thermal water, mildly alkaline and soft on the skin — squarely in the Japanese beauty-water family. It is colorless and clear with a faint hydrogen sulfide note and almost no taste. A generous 138 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves the kind of thin silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother. The source is exceptionally hot at 67.8 °C and is sampled from the storage tank inlet before reaching the bath.

About

Seoto Yuoto no Yado Ukiha is a ryokan in Amagase Onsen, an old hot spring town in Hita, Oita. Three baths here run at three different temperatures: the indoor bath under a hinoki ceiling is properly hot, the outdoor rotenburo, nicknamed teien-buro (庭園風呂, 'garden bath'), sits at a milder temperature with cedar covered hills all around, and a firewood heated goemonburo (五右衛門風呂), an iron cauldron bath, stays gently warm instead of scalding. The water is clear with just a faint whiff of sulfur, and it's mild enough to drink. A private hinoki family bath, with handrails for kids or older guests, can be booked from two people.

398. Seoto no Yado Ukihā, Hita, Oita ★ I went for the higaeri for ¥800. Higaeri is listed from 11:30 to 16:00. They stamp the Kyushu 88 onsen stamp rally. Toreco cards are issued for the onsen. The bath photos online match the actual place. Inside, there is a round bath with clear water, temperature 40. It is fine to breathe inside. To get to the outdoor bath area, you need to walk a little from the indoor area. The outdoor bath is a stone bath with clear water and a slight brown mineral deposit, with a pleasant view of the trees and bamboo. The water temperature is 38. There are two small barrels, one with cold water and one with cool water. A place with a pleasant rotenburo. It is not very convenient to get to, and it is not really worth making a special trip for, but if you are nearby or going for the achievement, it is a good option. 12.01.2025
