Kanaya Ryokan Senninburo A must-visit place on the Izu Peninsula. A huge, deep konyoku bath. There is a separate section with cool water, which is very pleasant to alternate with the warmer water. Rotenburo with utaseyu included. In the indoor bath, the ceilings are high, statues rise out of the water, there is wood everywhere, and lots of windows, a truly unique atmosphere. One of the popular mixed baths, where there are really many visitors of both sexes. Towels are allowed, and there is a separate entrance and a separate bath for women. This time we stayed overnight, there are large rooms for 6 people on the second floor right above the bath. Very authentically Japanese, but I suspect they are cold in winter. There are windows almost all around the perimeter.

Kanaya Ryokan 1000 Person Bath A very atmospheric historic ryokan, founded in 1867, with the bathhouse rebuilt in 1915, and its famous wooden mixed bath for “1,000 people” (senin-buro), built in the sukiya style from Japanese cypress, hinoki. A huge 24-hour indoor konyoku bath, with towels for women available on request. The bath has varying depth, about 50-120 cm in different sections, and is hot. Through a partition there is also a warm bath at about 36-38°. There is also a free kashikiri for half an hour in a separate pavilion, and at reception you can take a sign that says occupied/free. The bath photos were taken from the internet, and they match reality. The rooms traditionally do not have their own shower, it is in the onsen. The ryokan temporarily does not have its own kitchen, so we took a room without breakfast or dinner. A 7-Eleven ten minutes away on foot and a microwave on the 1st floor saved us, and there are almost no places in the town to grab a bite in the evening. 211. Thousand-Person Bath Kanaya Ryokan, Shimoda ★★★ A legendary ryokan for a thousand people, famous for its mixed indoor large bath. Day-use is listed from 9:00 to 21:00, and it costs ¥1,200. They stamp 60 Shizuoka onsen. The bath photos and videos from the internet match. The indoor large bath is mixed bathing, with several levels inside. The water is clear, and the temperature is hot. It looks like the bath from old museum photos, where a whole crowd of people sits in one bath. Breathing inside is fine. There were quite a lot of people, but the only inconvenience was in the changing room. From the indoor bath, there is a passage to a small outdoor bath with one utaseyu. The water is clear, and the temperature is hot. If mixed bathing does not bother you, then this is definitely a must-visit. The view and atmosphere in the indoor bath are very cool. 20.07.2024
