Kawachi No.5 Spring + Kanaya Onsen (blend of 2 sources)

Operated by · 金谷旅館

Mixed source

Simple

A simple thermal spring blended from two sources (Kawachi No.5 and Kanaya Onsen). Hypotonic and weakly alkaline, it has a soft, gentle feel on the skin and sits in the Japanese beauty-water family. The wellhead runs lukewarm at 36.2 °C, so it is reheated for bathing; with no dilution, recirculation, or disinfection, it stays an undemanding, lightly mineralized soak.

About

The senninburo at Kanaya Ryokan is, by common account, the largest all-hinoki (cypress) bath in Japan. Built in 1915 (Taisho 4), the vast wooden hall stretches roughly 20 metres and bathes you in the clean, warm scent of cypress throughout. It is a mixed bath (konyoku): women can also enter a connected women's bath and benefit from women-only hours. The ryokan itself was established in 1867 in Izu, Shizuoka, tucked in a quiet valley with spring water flowing directly from the base of Kanaya Mountain. Beyond the great hall, there is also a small outdoor rotenburo for those who want open sky. The combination of hot spring water, cypress, and a 160-year-old inn is genuinely hard to find elsewhere.

Kanaya Onsen. Built in 1930. Women's + mixed baths, different temperature segments, very beautiful architecture.

211. Thousand-person Bath Kanaya Ryokan, Shimoda The legendary thousand-person ryokan, famous for its large mixed indoor bath. Higaeri listed from 9:00 to 21:00, costs 1200. They stamp the Shizuoka 60 Onsens rally book. Photos and videos of the baths from the internet match reality. The large indoor bath is mixed, with several levels inside. Water is clear, temperature is hot. It looks like the very same bath from old museum photos where a huge crowd of people sits in one bath. Breathing inside is good. There were quite a few people, but the only inconvenience was in the changing room. From the indoor bath there's a passage to a small outdoor bath with one utaseyu. Water is clear, temperature is hot. If the mixed bath format doesn't bother you, this is definitely a must-visit. The look and atmosphere of the indoor bath are really amazing.
