About

Yama no Hotel Musouen sits on a hillside above the Yufuin basin, its open-air baths looking out over Mt. Yufudake. The ryokan traces its roots to 1938, when it opened as a lodging built around the Gomusoyu (御夢想温泉) spring. The baths are the main draw: the large women's rotenburo is famous for its wide-open views across the valley, while the men's Kobo-no-yu (弘法の湯) is the oldest bath on the property, housed in a thatched-roof building alongside a stone said to be connected to the spring's origins. Private family baths are available on a walk-in basis, and some rooms in the newer wing come with their own outdoor onsen bath. Day-use bathing is also available in the mornings.

730. Yama no Hotel Musouen, Yufuin ★★★ I went for a day visit for 1000. Public baths and private baths are included, I did not use the private baths. Day visits are listed from 10:00 to 14:30 (last entry at 14:00), but on certain days some baths are closed: Monday (indoor kashikiri), Tuesday (outdoor kashikiri), Wednesday (women's rotenburo), Thursday (men's small rotenburo), Friday (men's large rotenburo). On some days there may be no day visits at all. 1. Huge outdoor stone bath. The view outside is of the mountain and trees, the view inside is of the changing room building with a thatched roof. The water is clear, temperature 40.5. 2. Small outdoor stone bath. The water is clear, temperature 42-43. A top onsen with a great rotenburo, a must-visit. 06.01.2026
