849. Sakamaki Onsen Ryokan, Okuhida Onsen, Nagano (pt.1) ★★★ I stayed overnight and also came for a day visit. The day visit is listed as 11:00 to 16:00 for ¥600. It is included in the list of "secret" Hitou onsen. One night for one person with meals is 14-15k yen. It is tucked away on a short stretch between two road tunnels by the river. It looks hidden, and that is also the feeling it gives. At the same time, it is about a 10-minute ride from the stop in Hirayu Onsen. The staff are Japanese, very pleasant, and really know onsen, they immediately understand the customer. I arrived late, and dinner was already in full swing on the second floor. The owner at reception first suggested that I go to the onsen first, and then come to dinner afterward, in the end I was the only one at dinner, since all the other few guests had already finished. I took the double meal, dinner kaiseki and breakfast, and they understood right away and served the double meal without any questions. The kaiseki was fairly simple, but tasty, and the double portion was very welcome after a full day. In the room, the heating is shared and adjustable, but the difference is not very noticeable. Overall the temperature was fine in March, even with snowy days. The toilet was shared on the floor, and there was a sink in the room. About the baths: 1. Indoor bath. The water is clear with large fragments of white lime. Strong, proper sulfurous onsen smell. Temperature 43. Breathing inside is tolerable, there is a shower room. 2. Outdoor women's bath in stone. Great view of the mountain and forest, with a river below. The water is clear with white lime. The proper sulfurous onsen smell. The bottom of the bath is made of small stones. Temperature: 42.5-43. This is an extremely great place, top and a hidden gem. You should visit either for a higaeri trip or stay overnight. It is also very affordable. 09.03.2026 10.03.2026 11.03.2026

We finally visited for higaeri that lone onsen on the road to Kamikochi that we (and surely not just us) had driven past many times. And it turned out to be absolutely mind-blowing. The water is sulfuric with lots of large flakes, yet clear and very invigorating. The indoor bath is convenient for washing up and warming up, and you can crack the window open too. But the main attraction is of course the rotenburo with an incredible view of the cliffs and pleasant warm water. I didn't want to leave the rotenburo at all — I think you could easily sit there all day, and not just one day. This ended up being probably our last onsen of the year, and it was a worthy finale. I'd love to stay here sometime, and we'll definitely be coming back for higaeri more than once. Adding: higaeri is listed from 11:00 to 16:00, entry 600 yen. Apparently the higaeri sometimes doesn't operate, so it's better to call ahead if you're going specifically there. #rotenburo #sulfur
