About
Poetical is a small family-run pension high in Norikura Kogen, with its own set of private baths, kashikiri (貸切), fed by the local Norikura Kogen hot spring. Three separate bath houses run from spring through autumn, cut back to two in winter when the outdoor pools get harder to use in the cold. Each pairs a small indoor tub with its own outdoor one, and since there's no reservation system, you simply go into whichever is free. The water is a sulfur spring that clouds milky white on contact with the air and runs kakenagashi (掛け流し), fed straight from the source. One bath stays noticeably cooler, good for a long soak, while the other runs warmer with a fuller white haze. The pension has been run by the same family since 1979, built around its own tagline of 'white hot spring, home-cooked food.' Downstairs, a wood stove warms the shared lounge, and several of the west-facing rooms look straight out at the mountain.
