About
Iwaki Ryokan draws its bathwater from a spring on its own grounds, the only inn in Unzen to have one, and keeps it flowing fresh instead of topping it up. The baths sit on two floors: an indoor bath downstairs and an open-air rotenburo upstairs, left at its natural temperature. Pale crystals of yu no hana (湯の花) build up where the spring feeds the tubs, a sign of how directly the water arrives. Five rooms have their own source-fed open-air bath. There is no rentable private bath, so families with young children usually book one of these rooms instead. It's a small, older ryokan built around its water rather than around amenities.
