Yunosato Public Spa

Yunosato is a small communal bathhouse on a back street in Unzen onsen town, with one indoor tub of hot, milky white sulfur water that carries a faint mix of sulfur and iron in the air. There's some seating, but most people bathe standing, and the water runs so cloudy that gauging the tub's depth takes a moment. Baths here go back to 1653, making this the oldest communal bath in Unzen. Locals still call it Dankyu-buro (だんきゅう風呂): the tub water used to be kept in old rakkyo (pickled shallot) barrels, and dankyu is the local dialect word for rakkyo. The bathhouse moved to its current site in 1953. It's a plain, functional spot, gender-separated, quiet enough to hear birdsong outside, and used mostly by locals rather than tourists.
