A blended source classified as a simple sulfur spring. The water is almost colorless and clear, carrying the characteristic faint rotten-egg note of hydrogen sulfide. At pH 9.1 it is firmly alkaline, sitting near the top of the slippery 'beauty-water' range that leaves skin feeling smooth. It also runs notably high in metasilicic acid at 52.8 mg/kg, which adds a thin silica film for a softer after-feel.

About

This is a simple, town-run open-air bath at Sumatakyo Onsen: just one rock bath each for men and women, with no indoor bath and no mixed bathing. The water is piped in from a spring about five kilometers away, heated, and kept flowing rather than recirculated, so it's always fresh. It has the smooth, slightly slippery feel typical of sulfur water and is said to leave skin feeling soft. It isn't scalding hot, so it's easy to settle in for a long soak. No soap or shampoo is provided at the washing area. Behind the building there's a small reservation-only sauna, charged separately from the bath.

265. Bijinzukuri no Yu, Sumatakyo Onsen ★ Public onsen for ¥400. The operating schedule changes a lot by season, from one day a week to several days a week, so you should check before visiting. It is included in the Yuragi tegata, and now it is 1 of the 3 remaining places on the tegata. The bath photo is from the internet, and it matches. Inside there is a rotenburo with a large fence that blocks everything off, but it feels cozy in the onsen. The water is clear, with a soapy feel. The temperature is 40. The bath is very slippery. A good place, worth keeping in mind. 11.11.2024
