About
The main bath, Santoka (山頭火), has an indoor bath, an open-air bath, a sauna and a cold plunge. Its walls carry haiku by Taneda Santoka (種田山頭火), the wandering poet who loved Kawatana's water and lived here for a while. The spring itself is soft and faintly salty, leaving skin smooth and keeping you warm well after you towel off. For something more private, four reservable baths named Ume, Sakura, Kaede and Tsubaki make up Gotenyu (御殿湯), the lord's bath, recalling Mori Tsunamoto, a feudal domain lord who had his own bath built here in 1693. Day visitors can reserve it too, not just overnight guests, and the restaurant is known locally for kawara-soba (瓦そば), tea-soba grilled on a hot roof tile.
