Haiya

Haiya draws its own onsen water on the property, a natural spring that runs faintly salty and, by the ryokan's own account, eases sore joints and is kind to the skin. There are two separate bathing halls, one for each gender; both pair an indoor bath with an outdoor rotenburo overlooking the garden, one adds a reclining bath, the other an outdoor bath beside a small cascade. A garden sauna added in 2025, built like a Finnish smoke sauna, comes with a cold plunge and loungers for cooling off outside; it's free for overnight guests, with separate hours for men and women. There is also a free stone-bed room for lying down to sweat, and a reservable private bath with its own sauna. Only the rooms in the Shofuan (松風庵) annex have an onsen bath built into the room; the other room categories don't. Founded in 1884, the ryokan still opens through an entrance rebuilt to its original style, past a lobby of Kiso cypress pillars and a coffered ceiling of pine boards cut from thousand-year-old trees, looking out over a tended garden.
