About
Mimata Onsen is a quiet hot-spring cure spot along the Mimata River in Hamada, first found in 1864. Kameya, an eight-room ryokan there, keeps separate baths for men and women rather than mixed bathing; there's no rotenburo, but the shared bath is only a short walk from every room. The water runs clear and colorless with a soft, slightly slippery feel on the skin, long known locally as a beauty-skin bath, bijin no yu (美人の湯). It has also placed first in the skin-beauty category of Japan's annual hot-spring poll for three years running. Dinner is a kaiseki course built around Japan Sea seafood and local vegetables. The region's Iwami Kagura (石見神楽) dance-drama lends its pieces' names to every room here, and some guests come specifically to catch a nearby performance.
