A cold-mineral chloride spring (19.5 C at the wellhead, heated for bathing) led by sodium, calcium and magnesium. The 'iron-bearing' prefix on the certificate is earned — total iron 26 mg/kg, enough that the water emerges clear at the source and turns yellow-brown and slightly turbid by the time it reaches the lab. Neutral pH, moderately mineralized at 5.4 g/kg total solute, with a faint iron-rust note and a light salty-mineral taste on the lips.

About

The bath at Kimiidera Garden Hotel Hayashi, opposite Kimiidera (紀三井寺), the second temple on the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage and known for the earliest cherry blossom in the region. That is where the name Hana-no-yu (花の湯) comes from. Inside there is a large indoor tub, a sauna with a TV, a cold bath, and an open-air bath looking onto the hotel's Japanese garden. The water is drawn from 1,500 m under the property, an iron-bearing sodium chloride spring, clear but properly salty and heavy on minerals. The hotel has been in business since the 1880s, and the bath itself is an unfussy, everyday sort of place rather than a resort spa, used by locals as much as by pilgrims stopping off at the temple.

Stayed overnight. A very budget and worn business hotel, but with a decent onsen. Dinner was average; it's better to eat at one of the many nearby restaurants. There is an indoor bath and a small rotenburo (outdoor bath) overlooking its own garden. Sauna and mizuburo (cold bath) are available. Nearby is a tourist spot—a large temple—and local citrus fruits are sold. Overall, the place seems to have history. It is part of Kisen and 12tou.

505. Kimiideraonsen Hananoyu, Wakayama Onsen for 900 yen, located 15-30 minutes by public transport from Wakayama Station. Operating hours are 11:00 to 22:00. They stamp the 88 Onsen of Wakayama stamp book. They sell the 12 Onsen of Wakayama stamp book. Bath photos from the internet — they match. Indoor bath with clear water, slight onsen smell. Temperature 41. Breathing inside is fine. There's a sauna and cold bath. There's an outdoor bath — it wasn't operating during my April visit, but in November everything was fine. Essentially no view. Clear water, temperature 40.5. 12.04.2025 02.11.2025
