  • Aches & jointsstiff shoulders
  • Smooth skindry, rough skin
  • Recoveryfatigue, stress

A gentle simple thermal water — weakly alkaline, hypotonic, and hot at 58 °C at the wellhead. Total dissolved solids are light (828 mg/kg), so the water is soft and mineral-quiet rather than assertive. What stands out is the metasilicic acid: at 204 mg/kg it leaves the kind of thin silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards, placing this firmly in the Japanese 'beauty-water' family.

465. Osarunoyu (Monkey Onsen), Oita ★ Onsen for 430-650, located in a small separate area between Beppu and Oita. You choose from three public baths and private ones — we got the public rotenburo. The turn into the area in the evening first looked like a turn to nowhere, but then an island of life appeared — a complex of buildings. Operating hours listed as 05:00 to 22:00 (except Thu). They stamp the 88 Onsen of Kyushu book. We were in an unusual rotenburo. The changing room leads to a shower area which opens directly into a large rotenburo surrounded by a fence. Clear brown water. Temperature started at 46.7, we brought it down with about 100 buckets of cold water first to 45.5, but then the water mixed itself to 44.5. Turns out the bath has its own zones with different temperatures and we measured the hottest spots — by adding cold water we mixed everything (which is why the temperature suddenly changed across the whole bath). Interesting place. If passing between Oita and Beppu, worth considering for a visit, especially with the choice of different baths. 01.04.2025
