A lightly mineralized alkaline simple thermal spring (dissolved solids only 183 mg/kg). At pH 9.2 it sits firmly in Japan's beauty-water family, with the slippery soft feel that high alkalinity gives. The wellhead reading is 38 degrees Celsius and the cert classifies it as hypotonic, alkaline and warm-class — a gentle, low-stimulation soak.

About

One of the best-known lukewarm baths in Izu, in the hills of Izunokuni. Everything here runs kakenagashi straight from a 38°C spring, and the tubs are held at a spread of temperatures from about 36°C up to 41°C, so you pick the one you want and stay in the cool end as long as you like. There is a waterfall bath (utaseyu, 打たせ湯) as well.

255. Gensen Koma no Yusou, Izunokuni Public onsen, ¥850 for 90 minutes. The opening hours in the pamphlets and on Google Maps, at the time of my visit, were listed as 10:00 to 20:00 (except Mon). Maybe I misunderstood the schedule, but in practice it closed an hour earlier according to the timetable inside, I barely made it. They stamp the Shizuoka 60 onsen stamp rally 24/25. During my visit, the rotenburo was already closed, but from the photos it should have been interesting. The indoor bath photo from the internet roughly matches, the actual condition was something between the two photos. Inside, there are five small baths arranged in a semicircle, for 2 to 3 people each. The water is clear, and the temperatures of the baths are listed as follows: 1. 35.5-37.5 2. 37.5-39.5 3. 35.5-37.5 4. 39.5-41 5. 35.5-37.5 The rotenburo might have been much more interesting, the photos online look good, but I only got to use the indoor baths. 10.11.2024
