Shosuke no Yado Takinoyu sits on the bank of the Yu River (湯川) in Higashiyama Onsen, Aizuwakamatsu, and is considered the founding spot of the hot spring town, with the water said to have been discovered 1,300 years ago by the Buddhist monk Gyoki (行基上人) near the Fushimigadaki (伏見ヶ滝) waterfall. The large communal baths look out over the river on one side and the waterfall on the other, and the water runs fresh in kakenagashi (源泉掛け流し) tubs alongside heated pools. There are also seven separately bookable private baths, including open-air options right at the water's edge and rooftop baths for stargazing, plus in-room rotenburo in the detached wing. The inn has been open for over 140 years and carries the old-town feel that goes with that.
