856. Yamazato-no-iori Soene, Fukuji Onsen, Okuhida Onsen, Gifu ★ I went for a higaeri using the Okuhida tegata (2 stickers), the regular price is 1100. Higaeri is listed from 15:00 to 21:00. For higaeri, one bath area is available, and there are also interesting rotenburo only for guests staying overnight. Inside the place, it feels very ryokan-like and pleasant. 1. Semi-open rectangular bath. View of the trees, in March it felt apocalyptically atmospheric. The water is clear, with rare white and brown lime deposits. Temperature 43. 2. Indoor sauna onsen. The water is clear, temperature 40.5. It is easy to breathe inside. A very pleasant place. Considering that there are also interesting baths for overnight guests, it is worth considering for a stay. 10.03.2026

Two outdoor baths at Soene sit right along the Hirayu River and swap between men and women once a day: Kama-yu, built into a thick iron cauldron once used at the nearby Kamioka mine, and Iwa-yu, made from large boulders with smooth cedar headrests. A separate indoor bath, Fuku no Yu, draws its own source from 300 meters underground and keeps the water flowing fresh; it also has a footbath and a sauna. Three more private baths, each with its own small indoor bath, use Fukuji Onsen's shared spring and suit families with kids or older guests. Guest rooms don't have their own bath. The ryokan is centered on a farmhouse dating to 1836, moved here from Niigata and reopened in 2005; it's registered as a tangible cultural property. Guests eat together around an irori hearth in the ground-floor dining room, in a quiet corner of Fukuji Onsen in the Okuhida mountains.
