Kyoto Sento (1010)

The public catalog (1010, read sen-to) of the Kyoto Prefectural Cooperative of Public Bath-house Operators, the trade body for the prefecture's licensed public bathhouses. This is a grouping, not a stamp program: member baths share one authoritative catalog and each links to its official 1010.kyoto page. Kyoto's sento range from early-Showa machiya bathhouses with tiled murals to modern baths with saunas, many still wood-fired or run on prized soft water.

Kyoto Sento (京都銭湯) is the public catalog of the Kyoto Prefectural Cooperative of Public Bath-house Operators (京都府公衆浴場業生活衛生同業組合), the trade body for the prefecture's licensed public bathhouses. Its 1010.kyoto site (the number reads sen-to) maps the operating sento across Kyoto, from machiya-style neighbourhood baths in the old city to modern bathhouses with saunas and open-air tubs.

A sento is a neighbourhood public bath, distinct from a hot-spring resort: most heat ordinary tap or well water rather than draw onsen, and a good number of Kyoto's baths are still wood-fired or run on soft (軟水) water prized for how it feels on the skin. The adult bathing fee is set by the prefecture (¥550 since April 2025), with reduced rates for children; towels, sauna, and other amenities are charged separately.

Not a stamp program here

This is a grouping, not an Onsen Oni badge. We list these baths together because they belong to one cooperative and share one authoritative catalog, and we link each one back to its official 1010.kyoto page. There is no badge to earn for visiting them.

What you will find

Kyoto's sento range widely:

  • Historic baths: early-Showa machiya bathhouses with tiled murals, coffered ceilings, and carp ponds, several of them registered cultural properties.
  • Soft-water and wood-fired baths: many advertise 軟水 (soft water) and wood-fired heating, both traditional points of pride.
  • Modern facilities: electric baths, jet baths, herbal 薬湯, saunas and cold-water baths, with late-night and early-morning opening at some locations.

The member baths

The list on this page is matched to Onsen Oni's own catalog: each bath links through to its full page here, and out to its entry on the cooperative's official site. The cooperative's official site has the most accurate and current information on each bath, including any changes to hours and closed days.
